1 : Founding and Founder

Founder/ Haj Muhammad Hassan al-Kbous began his commercial career in 1938 AD in a commercial store, in the Salt Market, in the capital, Sana’a, and he continued his commercial activity in the sale of goods, most notably coffee by traditional methods and means, in preservation, transportation, roasting and grinding, as it was known until that date. The qualities that Haji Muhammad al-Kbous enjoyed, which are honesty, trustworthiness, good treatment, humility accompanied by seriousness and respect for the consumer, all of these qualities had a great role in his good reputation and the spread of his fame, so he had a good reputation in the market to gain the trust and respect of his clients, friends and everyone who knew him, thus becoming the focus of people’s trust. He came from different provinces, and his shop in the old Sana’a became a stable for their messages and appointments, and since he was the most famous among his family and the most respected, they made him the dean of the family while he was still in his early years.

This good reputation and the belief that Haji Muhammad had in his depths in developing his trade and in its promising future, his high self-will and his persistence in exerting effort and continuous work in strengthening and developing the coffee trade and expanding it until it was raised, so it succeeded and became famous, and its good reputation spread. Remembered locally, regionally and globally. The truth of this saying lies in what Hajj al-Kbous used to say to his employees: “We will grow and become famous.”

With the beginning of the forties of the last century, the founding pilgrim began to expand his commercial activity, traveling to the city of Aden to bring various goods. While he was there, he drank Ceylon and Kenyan tea imported to it, which are of the best types of international tea. His enchanting taste surprised him, so he loved him and got used to drinking it. Indeed, the secret of that wonderful taste made him cling to it as a charming commodity that he must transport to his city, Sana’a, to add to its beauty the charm and splendor of its taste, to be drank by its people, most of whom only know drinking coffee crust, and few of them drink coffee.

Al-Hajj (Al-Kbous) was the first to introduce high-quality tea to San’a in 1948 AD and proceeded to sell it, with its high quality, along with the authentic Yemeni coffee (Al-Kbous). They accept it in increasing frequency with the passage of days. Al-Kbous was the only one in Sana’a who focused on selling tea with great interest and effort. So tea was added to the al-Kbous; So that its name became (Al-Kbous Tea) as it was known for its high quality since the beginning.

The great success of (Al-Kbous) in the tea trade prompted him to establish the first factory in Yemen to roast and grind coffee with modern machines. It was opened in 1951 to constitute, in Yemen, a qualitative leap in the coffee trade.

At the end of the seventies and the beginning of the eighties, the founding pilgrim introduced his sons/ Hassan, Ibrahim, Hashem, Amin, Mamoun to the market, to hand them over the banner of production and trade, so they made the sons’ teachers - under the care and supervision of their father - great big shifts that became the basis for the production and commercial strategy of the Al-Kbous Group.
